Volleyball Positional Specific Training

Positional TrainingNew for 2019/2020

The general concept of Volleyball Positional Specific Training (VPST) is to train in your chosen position with athletes of similar age and ability. Each session there will be opportunities to transfer position specific knowledge and to continue to learn from an outstanding group of EDVC coaches. EDVC provides the athlete with learning opportunities in addition to weekly practices. VPST will start in December and be offered in select weeks of the regular season. We spend the first few weeks in 45 min sessions by position. For part of positional sessions we would split the athletes up individually and for the second part we would do combined small group training where skills sets would overlap such as Setters working with Middles. The advantage you will have at EDVC is that you will be able to take this knowledge and apply it right away within an aspect of team play.

Once EDVC practice schedules are finalized VPST dates will posted on this page.

SETTING

Often referred to as the quarterback of the team, a good setter makes a great team. There will be discussions regarding strategy, set selection, leadership qualities, motivation of fellow teammates and coping with pressure situations. Techniques will focus on maximum efficiency and accuracy. A major area of teaching for the setters will be squaring to position 4 on every set to enhance deception at higher levels.

Your coaches will cover skills such as:

  • Hand and body positioning
  • Movement and footwork to ball: move – stop – set, square to four on front and back set
  • Repetition, repetition, repetition!
  • Jump setting
  • Bad ball setting
  • Variety of sets – high balls to variety of quick’s
  • Second ball attack – dump with left and right hand, dump when off the net
  • Blocking – hand position, penetration, positioning and timing
  • Play calling off serve receive and in transition
  • Running an effective offense
  • Setting against the flow

Middle Hitter/Blocker

One of the most challenging positions to play, learn what it takes to become a dominant middle blocker. Coaches will focus on individual technique for both block and attack. Being able to apply these skills to the transition part of the game is the advantage you will have through VSPT.

Your coaches will cover skills such as:

  • Biomechanics of arm action
  • Proper footwork for a middle
  • Attack options – with power and with finesse
  • Ability to attack a variety of 1st tempo sets
  • Transitioning from down/free, serve receive to attack, defense to attack
  • Proper block (individual) – upper body with hand positioning and penetrating arms, footwork to defend 1st tempo as well as how to get to outside sets, reading opposing setter and offense

Outside (Pin) Hitters

The most successful teams have incredible outside attackers. This position is predominately designed for outside attackers (zone 4) but there will be opportunities to learn the skill of opposite (zone 2) as well. Your coaches will focus on individual technique with an emphasis placed on the transition part of the game and what is required to be a successful outside attacker.

Your coaches will cover skills such as:

  • Biomechanics of arm action
  • Proper footwork for an outside hitter – in and out of system
  • Attack options such as line, cross, roll shots
  • Ability to attack a variety of sets
  • Proper block (individual) – upper body with hand positioning and penetrating arms
  • Proper block (team) – bunch and commit block

Defensive Specialist and Libero

Becoming one of the most valuable positions, successful teams usually have an incredible libero leading the way. Your coaches will teach you how to effectively be the leader of the back row. Coaches will focus on the technical aspects of this position.

Your coaches will cover skills such as:

Serve Receive:

  • Overall technique
  • How to pass outside your body
  • Receiving serves that are in front, push you back and move you laterally

Defense:

  • Proper body positioning
  • Learning to read opposition – line of approach, armswing

Ball Control:

  • Learn how to be the 2nd setter
